THE CAPTURE + CULTIVATE TOOL KIT
The embodied knowledge of the maker has value in all areas of practice, from art & design to science and industry.
For the Dissecting Craft Making research project (VC-ECR Award), CFPR Senior Research Fellow and artist-printer, Angie Butler worked with CFPR Research Associate, Crafts Council Fellow and jewellery designer-maker, Sofie Boons. Together, Angie and Sofie aimed to develop an innovative methodology to translate practical actions that have been learned and acquired within craft practice, (i.e. embodied knowing) into something that is transferable to a wide range of users. An outcome of the project is an online tool kit, available to all as a downloadable free online pack, providing opportunity for skills development and insight into personal creative practice for students, artists and crafts people of all levels. Professionals can skill-share and utilise the tool kit as an alternative to traditional demonstration, practical workshop methods of teaching, and to develop refined creative practice.
The project trained and informed creative practitioners, shared skills with the public and developed methodologies for embodied knowledge transference within craft practices for professionals. A paper was presented at the Biennial International Craft Sciences Conference 2023 and published in the Design Education Journal, FormAkademisk forging connections with the wider international making community to apply the tool kit within studio practice and learning environments.
The Capture and Cultivate methodology was first trialled by Angie and Sofie, each within their own practice and then tested with four practitioners in their professional workspaces. The outcomes of these three guided case studies were then analysed and used to create a tool kit that can be used by practitioners independently. The final tool kit was then tested by a selection of practitioners and refined prior to its publication online.
