Creative Economy Engagement Fellow: Digital Tactile Mapping
This fellowship addressed several core themes of the government’s Industrial Strategy Green Paper. It focused on public facing needs in the health, tourism and heritage industries, using novel digital technologies. The project researched and prototyped different methods of tactile map making, creating maps for the visually impaired to improve navigation around the city of Bristol. This included computer-based modelling and CNC rapid prototyping technology to make a tactile taxonomy for map prototypes. These could be cheaply produced using recycled paper and robust enough to incorporate Braille dots and raised textured symbols.
