Multi-material 3D printing for the fabrication of human body supports for multiple sclerosis patients
This project is a collaboration between UWE Centre for Fine Print Research, Bristol University Advanced Composites Institute and the Multiple Sclerosis Research Unit, Brain Centre, Southmead Hospital. The project is a pilot to investigate postural support systems for wheelchair users with MS, to help improve trunk stability and reduce tremor. The investigation involves the development of a methodology for the fabrication of support pads exploiting auxetic foams and structures which offer improved load distribution and vibration damping properties. 3D scanning and 3D printing will be used so that the shape of the support pads can conform to human anatomy. The image shows auxetic and non-auxetic test specimens for static and dynamic testing.
