Creative Colour Lab brings together a body of colour research that has been integral to the Centre for Fine Print Research (CFPR) since its very beginnings. Colour research at CFPR has developed alongside the centre itself, forming a core strand of its research identity and practice.
Led by Carinna Parraman, Director of CFPR and Professor of Colour, Design and Print, the Creative Colour Lab reflects long-standing expertise in colour print, image quality, materials, and visual perception. The Lab supports artists and designers while advancing research into digital imaging, printing technologies, and colour systems.
Research within the Creative Colour Lab includes projects on colour light fastness, colour measurement and ageing, photographic image enhancement, alternative inkjet and colour methods, colour and visual perception, and the impact of paper and substrates on colour reproduction and conservation. The Lab has worked closely with academic and industry partners, including Hewlett Packard and the University of Milan, and has contributed to the development of specialist artist materials in consultation with the Getty and Tate.
More recently, Creative Colour Lab research has extended into public engagement and knowledge exchange through the lecture series at the University of the West of England, From Colour Fundamentals to Colour Applications across Design and Industry, exploring the role of colour across design, art, and industry.
