Colour Theories in the Western and Eastern Cultures, by Vien Cheung 13 November 2024
Colour plays an important role on shaping aesthetics, visual impact, and psychological resonance. Throughout the years, there have been many different colour theories emerged, providing recommendations on regulating the correct use of colours, in order to maximise the effects that colours – both independently and in combinations – could offer. In both the western and eastern cultures, there has always been a strong belief that colour is integral to the nature of the universe. This lecture aims to provide an overview of the direction of colour studies on fundamental colour theories through time, drawing attention to the different approaches between the western culture (with examples in Europe and USA) and eastern culture (focussing on China in the Far East). By understanding these distinctions, we can gain a deeper appreciation for the diverse principles upon which various colour theories are built and their potential applications.

Biography:
Vien Cheung, Associate Professor at University of Leeds, has authored >100 refereed publications in the areas of colour vision, colour science, colour imaging and colour design. Her ethos on integrity and diversity takes her to explore how colour can be used as a vehicle to shift our ‘black and white’ judgements into a more variegated and expansive perception of the world. Vien is active in charitable and educational colour organisations including the International Colour Association, Colour Group (Great Britain) and Society of Dyers and Colourists, for which she is a Past President, the Chairman and an Honorary Secretary respectively.
About the Lecture Series
Understanding the role of colours across industries varies significantly. It requires different skills, languages, and tools to communicate effectively and accurately. This presentation is the first of a series of lectures, “From Colour Fundamentals to Colour Applications across Design and Industry”, which comprises nine inspirational women speakers who are experts and practitioners in their field, all working and drawing from their disciplines, including in printing, fashion design, product design, art, interior design, built environment (design, materials, urban planning, conservation), and material science and production, will explore and discuss current thinking about the role of colours across disciplines.
This series of CPD short lectures (approx 30 minutes per lecture) is aimed at practitioners working with colours in design. It is funded by the University of The West of England, Bristol, and hosted by the Centre for Print Research
