CFPR Associate Professor at Cheltenham Science Festival Panel on Sustainable Cities

Dr Tavs Jørgensen, Associate Professor at the Centre for Print Research (CFPR), UWE Bristol, was invited to participate in a panel discussion at this year’s Cheltenham Science Festival exploring the future of sustainable cities.

The discussion brought together experts from across the fields of design, architecture, housing and urban development to examine how cities can respond to the environmental and social challenges of the future.

Drawing on his research at CFPR, Tavs shared insights from his work developing composite earth bricks as a low-carbon and circular alternative to conventional construction materials. His research explores how locally sourced earth-based materials, combined with innovative manufacturing techniques, can contribute to more sustainable building practices and support the transition towards regenerative approaches to construction.

Joining Tavs on the panel was Gabriella Bennett, journalist and author specialising in housing, architecture, place and travel. Bennett’s work focuses on the transformative potential of radical urban planning, and her forthcoming book, How to Build a City, examines how cities can be designed to better serve people and the environment.

The conversation highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary approaches to urban development, bringing together perspectives from material innovation, architecture, planning and public policy to imagine more sustainable and resilient futures for our cities.
