Working LEGO Printing Presses Bring the History of Print to Life
A new project on LEGO Ideas is combining design, engineering, and print history in a beautifully hands-on way. Created by Ben Goodman, CFPR Member and Senior Technical Instructor at UWE, this LEGO Ideas submission features two fully working printing presses built entirely from LEGO bricks.
These are not static display models. Each press is fully articulated, with moving mechanisms that operate in the same way as their real-world counterparts- giving builders a tangible way to understand how printing technology works.
Two Fully Functional LEGO Presses
The project includes two different working press designs, each inspired by historic machines that are still used by printers today:
Lever-operated platen press
Inspired by the Albion Press and built from 312 pieces, this model uses a traditional lever mechanism to apply pressure to the printing surface.
Roller-based press
Built from 163 pieces, this compact design uses rollers to transfer pressure across the print bed, offering a different mechanical approach to the printing process.
Both presses demonstrate the elegant engineering behind traditional printmaking, reimagined through LEGO as a universal building system.
Why This Project Matters
The development of mechanical printing fundamentally changed how ideas moved through the world. Once text and images could be printed rather than copied by hand, knowledge became easier to share and harder to control.
This LEGO Ideas project brings that history to life by placing the “means of production” directly into the builder’s hands. By making printing presses accessible, understandable, and interactive, the project opens up conversations around design, technology, and the social impact of print.
It also connects with an existing community of LEGO fans who already create relief printing plates from bricks and use external presses. This project completes the loop by allowing people to print LEGO using a LEGO-built press, entirely within the LEGO system.
