EKA PRINT EXCHANGE PROJECT: LOOKING FORWARD TO HEARING FROM YOU

Angie Butler Snr. Research Fellow CFPR invited MA Printmaking students at UWE to take part in a print exchange project organised by EKA Graafika, Tallinn, Estonia: Alona Chuprina, Margarita Feofanova, Chantal Gerschuetz, Merit Himmelreich, Triin Mänd, Helena Pass, Marten Prei, Sandra Puusepp and supervised by Charlotte Biszewski. After presenting at the International Conference: Heritage in the Service of Resilient Communities 2024 in Viljandi via the UWE Academic Study Fund, Angie visited The Estonian Academy of Arts EKA, Tallinn and TYPA Print and Paper Centre, Tartu to develop her research network. The print exchange project was co-ordinated at EKA GRAAFIKA Tallinn Estonia with participating institutions: UWE Bristol UK, THE EUGENIUSZ ACADEMY OF ART & DESIGN Wrocław Poland, and OSLO NATIONAL ACADEMY OF THE ARTS (KHiO) Norway.
EKA PRINT EXCHANGE VISION
Our vision is to create new connections between printmaking departments and students through collaboration and sharing physical works.
The theme for our exchange was Looking forward to hearing from you. Like writing a letter to a penpal, we wanted to know how you are and what you are working on. Depictions of your current ideas or progress, like experiments, are very welcome.
We invited printmaking students from all years to take part and submit an original print edition of 15. Each print is packed in an envelope and they are shipped to EKA printmaking, we will then collate all the work and send back 10 mixed prints from other students to each participant.
PRINT GUIDELINES
The work had to fit neatly in a size C5 envelope. The envelope must have the name and work title written on it. The envelope could also be an artwork (without any restrictions). The artist does not get their own work back! The prints must be clearly signed with the following information: work title, technique, edition (e.g 1/15, 2/15), artist name, year. The edition size is 15. Every artist gets 10 shuffled prints back and the studio gets one full edition.All printmaking techniques could be used as long as the prints are an edition. They had to be as close to each other as possible (monotypes were allowed only if they fulfilled this requirement). The works needed to have some physical manipulation, so entirely digital and riso prints were not allowed. We encouraged use of good quality, printmaking paper, usually ranging from 90gsm to 320gsm, but lighter weight Japanese papers were also suitable.
EXHIBITION GUIDELINES
Each university will receive a box of all of the prints from each student. This will be for exhibiting should the university or students wish. Each group would provide good quality photo documentation.
