Tactile reproductions of historical textiles- Workshop
UWE Bristol is conducting a research project to enhance inclusive public access to historic textiles, focusing on new methods for digitising and presentation, with particular emphasis on the intricate stumpwork embroideries from The Holburne Museum in Bath, and is looking for volunteers to take part in focus groups.
Funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, this initiative aims to improve documentation, conservation, and public engagement with these textiles, addressing the challenges posed by traditional display methods, which limit physical access and interpretative potential.
The project involves creating accessible tactile reproductions that allow visually impaired audiences to understand and experience the historical significance and craftsmanship of these cultural items. Two focus groups will be organised to evaluate the effectiveness of these reproductions, facilitated by Dr Xavier Aure and Dr George Jenkinson from the Centre for Print Research.
Participants in the study will engage with tactile reproductions of historical textiles during sessions held at the Centre for Print Research 15th and 16th October 2024. Each focus group will consist of about ten participants and will last a full day, with discussions centred on their interaction with the textile samples and suggestions for improvement.
These groups aim to create a feedback loop, where the first session gathers initial impressions and the second applies improvements based on this feedback, allowing for a thorough assessment of the reproductions’ functionality and enhancements. Attendees will be provided with transportation. Lunch and other amenities will be offered to ensure a comfortable and conducive environment for all participants.
