CFPR Researcher at Houston Centre for Photography

In April, CFPR researcher and lecturer Frank Menger was invited to showcase ‘The SIM project’ together with artist and anthropologist Liz Hingley at Houston Centre for Photography.

During a one-week residency, the team held workshops with refugees and asylum-seekers to the USA, and made keepsake jewellery from photographs on participants’ smartphones onto photographic glass plates, using the new SIMPOD, a bespoke new camera/darkroom system. The SIMPOD was specially designed for the SIM project to photograph and develop photographic dry gelatine glass plates made during the workshop.

During an artist talk, Frank and Liz discussed the conceptual and technical evolution of the project over seven years through experimentation with digital and analogue photographic processes, 3D printing and jewelly making. Wearable glass and metal artefacts made during numerous workshops in 6 countries across Europe were exhibited as projects, digital fan projections and an analogue slide show.
