Sonny Lee Lightfoot – Copper Sounds: Indian Residency exploring Sonic Ceramics
In early January 2024 Copper Sounds, Ghatam artist Sumana Chandrashekhar and Ghatam makers Ramesh Kesavan and Hariharan Kanagumeyyappan took part in a 10-day residency at Art Ichol in Maihar, India. They learnt about each other’s making and musical practices, collaborating to create new work.
The group explored the location of Maihar, engaging with both local materials and languages – meeting musicians, potters, ceramic artists, poets and folk singers. These meetings and experiences, with individuals who are all supporting and nurturing the local area and culture, inscribed themselves deeply onto both the artists and artworks. They take the form of ceramic objects and audio recordings that combine both the conventional and the experimental. This project was made possible through support and funding from The Indian Ceramics Triennale, The British Ceramics Biennial, Art Ichol, The Henry Moore Foundation, The British Council and Arts Council England.
