Research Title: Beyond the Surface: Integrating Multispectral and 3D Imaging to Enhance the Study, Conservation, and Engagement of Historical Textiles.
Commenced: October 2024
Supervisory Team: Dr Xavier Aure Calvet and Dr Gary Atkinson
Lydia Beckett is undertaking a PhD funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council as part of a wider project titled ‘An investigation of 3D technologies applied to historic textiles for improved understanding, conservation and engagement’.
Her research involves implementing an integrated 3D modelling system, combining multispectral imaging, photometric stereo and photogrammetry, to historical textiles. The project is a collaboration between the CFPR and the Bristol Robotics Laboratory.
The expected are outcomes are to:
- Improve the accurate geometry of digital reconstructions of historical textile surfaces.
- Extract material information resolved in 3D to understand the life history of textile artefacts and improve conservation efforts.
Lydia completed an MSc in Archaeological Science from the University of Oxford and holds a BSc in Natural Sciences from the University of York.
