Becky completed a PhD under supervision of Carinna Parraman exploring methodologies for digital colour printing in textile design at UWE as part of the 3D3 Centre for Doctoral Training. The research inquiry investigated a number of variables to determine their impact on colour outcome using a Practice-as-Research methodology. These practical experiments progressed into the development of three methods, which aid a designer’s colour expectation knowledge; a Colour Reference Book, Digital Lab Dip tests presented as Colour Maps, and a set of Indicator ICC profiles, generated from data accumulated through measuring printed colour differences on a variety of substrates. These visual prompts are intended to support designers to build their own internal colour look-up table enabling them to predict and resolve colour issues during the design process. The methods were analysed, using a body of colour work, inspired by archival research of the British Interwar period, as a real-world test case. The work features in the Journal of Textile Design Research and Practice.
Prior to undertaking a PhD Becky ran her own business making bespoke furniture featuring her textile designs. She holds a Masters Degree in Design, specialising in Printed Textiles from Sir John Cass School of Art, Architecture and Design and a Batchelor Honours Degree in Fine Art from Bath Spa University and is a AMUSF trained traditional and modern upholsterer.
