Announcing the seventh in our series of colour lectures ‘From Colour Fundamentals to Colour Applications Across Design and Industry’ will be on 26 February 2025 and presented by Professor Agata Kwiatkowska-Lubańska, who will be talking about ‘Colour Material and Finish (CMF) in Contemporary Design’ Eventbrite
Introduction
Designing colour, material and finish strategies is an independent design discipline, that has grown rapidly in the design industry during the last two decades. The vast number of materials available, new finishing technologies and the wide choice of colours mean that product designers often require CMF expertise. The CMF method allows us to identify not only the visual, but also the intangible aspects of a product, such as the emotional layer and the impact on our senses. In my presentation, I would like to show the methodologies used for CMF design, regardless of the type of industry for which the product is dedicated. They are an important tool both in my design practice and in educating students at the Faculty of Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow.
Biographical details
Agata Kwiatkowska-Lubańska is a professor and vice-rector of the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, Poland. She has a Ph.D. in industrial design (2005). The topic of the doctoral dissertation was ‘Colour in Brand Identity in the Context of the Globalisation of Corporate Activities’. She is a head of a Colour Design Studio at the Faculty of Industrial Design, co-founder of the Polish Colour Association and a promotor of many international and local events devoted to colour theory and practice. Agata is involved in colour forecasting in Poland and has collaborated widely with various industry partners, designing colours for different products and interior architecture. An engaged design educator with executive board positions in organizations and educational institutions, she is passionate about colour as a powerful tool for the human environment improvement.
Approximate length of lecture is 30 minutes. The lecture will be accessible on the day and during the afternoon from 12.00 (GMT) midday until midnight.

Understanding the role of colours across industries varies significantly. It requires different skills, languages, and tools to communicate effectively and accurately. The series of lectures, “From Colour Fundamentals to Colour Applications across Design and Industry”, comprises nine inspirational women speakers who are experts and practitioners in their field. All are working and drawing from their disciplines, including in printing, fashion design, product design, art, interior design, built environment (design, materials, urban planning, conservation), and material science and production, and will explore and discuss current thinking about the role of colours across disciplines.
