The Development of Data Driven Design for Wheelchair Seats
Bec Chalkley is a PhD student funded by the AHRC’s National Productivity Investment Fund. Her study focuses on the development and testing of data-driven approaches to the design and digitally assisted fabrication of bespoke wheelchair seating and postural support devices (PSDs) which reduce the risk of secondary health complications such as pressure sores. The Motivation Charitable Trust are a Bristol based wheelchair manufacturer with over 25 years’ experience in providing wheelchairs for developing countries. This project builds on the CFPR’s extensive expertise in digital design and fabrication, seeking to utilise digitally driven upholstery foam shaping methods and 3D printing with elastomers.
The project draws on advice and support from the occupational and physiotherapy experts in UWE’s Faculty of Health and Applied Sciences.
